The cost to refinish your hardwood floors will vary. There are a few things to take into consideration when wanting to know how much it will cost to refinish or resurface your wood flooring.
Some companies switch around the terms "refinishing" and "resurfacing" when explaining these processes. Here's how we at Austin Wood Refinishing classify them:
Hardwood floor refinishing - this is the heavy duty wood floor makeover. It often involves a lot of sanding work to remove scratches, dents and nicks that have formed on the wood floor due to normal traffic, pets, moving furniture and daily use over several years time. We will sand down your floors to remove those imperfections. We also may reinforce wood planks that are pulling up or have partially lifted nails. We will have to level the floor after our scratch removal is completed so that the floor is nice and even. Once the floor is even and surface imperfections have been carefully sanded away, we will clean your hardwood floors to remove the dust and debris, apply a fresh stain to the wood and lastly, apply a new polyurethane coat to seal in and protect the wood from things like moisture.
Hardwood floor resurfacing -
kind of like it sounds, we are taking care of the surface of your hardwood flooring to make sure the wood flooring underneath (your investment) stays protected through all of life's wear and tear. We will remove the uppermost layer of your wood flooring - typically the coating that was previously put on and the old stain. Now is your chance to choose a new stain for your wood flooring in Austin, TX if you want to go with something different, or we can help you match your previous stain with the one that we will apply. Once we remove those layers, we will re-stain your hardwood floors and apply a new polyurethane layer to protect your floors for years to come. They will look shiny, new and beautiful.
The first step is going to be the prep work. Safety first. We are going to hammer down any protruding nails that may have lifted up over time. Next, we'll remove floor debris with a vacuum cleaner and mop. We want the wood flooring to be clean and ready for the next steps. Next, we are going to seal off doors and vents to keep dust from settling onto the work space, interfering with the refinishing process.
Next, we typically pull up the baseboards where the floor meets the wall. This ensures that we won't damage your baseboards during the process. If however, we deem the baseboards safe to leave, we will leave them on the edges of the room.
Now we are going to rough-sand the floor. To do this, we will use a drum sander or a belt sander, whichever works best for your flooring. After using the large sander, we will transition into using a smaller handheld sander, called an edger or an orbital sander. With both sanders, we will start with a grittier sandpaper and then transition to finer grains as the process continues. This ensures that as the refinishing process unfolds, we are ridding your floors of every imperfection possible.
Now we will use a screensander to sand the wood flooring, making it level and smoothing out any inconsistencies.
Next, we will remove all dust accumulated on the floors during this process. Using a vacuum or a mop or both, we will clean the area, picking up all fine grains that were created during the sanding processes.
Almost done. We will apply the wood stain. This is the fun part. If you loved your wood stain and want to keep it, we can certainly match it and get you to the same color that you had before. And if you want to change up the look of your flooring by selecting a new wood stain, we can do that too. There are many options of wood stains available. These are a few common choices for wood stains on hardwood flooring in Austin, TX.
Last part - we will apply the finish. We use a water-based polyurethane finish that looks beautiful and will protect your hardwood flooring for years to come.
Austin, Westlake, Bee Caves, Pflugerville, Manor, Hornsby, Elgin, Manchaca, Barton Creek, Del Valle, Leander, Round Rock and Cedar Park.
Screening and recoating - Wood floor screening is the process of removing the old polyurethane coating from the wood to recoat the wood, leaving it sparkling and looking fresh and rejuvenated. If your hardwood flooring needs a little pick-me-up, give us a call today.
